The Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound Credentialing and Privileging (C&P) is a certification for doctors in Malaysia. It certifies that one is competent in performing ultrasound scan for obstetric patients without supervision. It's particularly important for doctors working in General Practice, whether in the public or private sector.
In September 2024 when I was working at Klinik Kesihatan (KK) Sundar, the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P programme was held. I was deeply troubled by the extreme isolation of KK Sundar, which affected my enthusiasm for the work there. At that time, my sole aim was to pursue Medical Education. The Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P had little relevance with Medical Education. Consequently, I decided not to participate in the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P programme, unlike my colleagues who did.
However, it turned out that my applications for Medical Lecturer posts were all unsuccessful. Later in October 2024, I got transferred to Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak (KKIA) Limbang. Unlike KK Sundar, I really enjoyed working at KKIA Limbang, due to its supportive work environment, manageable workload, lack of on-calls and location in the nice town of Limbang. My wonderful experience at KKIA Limbang made me consider doing General Practice instead of Medical Education in the long term.
Following that, the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P which I dismissed as irrelevant previously became important for me. Every one of my colleagues at KKIA Limbang at that time had attained the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P. I regretted letting go of the opportunity to do it earlier. Thankfully though, I was then told that I would be given the opportunity to join the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P programme at KKIA Limbang in the following year.
In May 2025, the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P programme at KKIA Limbang began. I and several of my new colleagues joined it. We first had to attend 2 lectures, one on 1st trimester ultrasound and another on 2nd and 3rd trimester ultrasound. We were then issued our logbooks for the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P. We had to perform 15 ultrasound scans under supervision of the Family Medicine Specialist, 5 for each trimester, and another 15 ultrasound scans without supervision, 5 for each trimester, then record the details of those ultrasound scans in the logbook with the ultrasound images as evidence.
I participated in the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P programme with my fullest commitment, dedication and enthusiasm, not wanting to miss out on it once again. On 1 August 2025, I completed my Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P logbook, got it signed off by the Family Medicine Specialist and submitted it in time for the deadline. At that time, I had firmly decided on pursuing General Practice (Family Medicine) specialisation, making the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P even more important than ever for me.
In October 2025, I finally got endorsed for the Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P. I will be receiving my actual Basic Obstetrics Ultrasound C&P certificate soon.
