The tale of two paradises

There are actually many similarities between my current Medical Officer (MO) post at Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak (KKIA) Limbang and my Teaching Fellow (TF) post at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) from October 2020 to July 2021.

  • Both posts give me a very high degree of job satisfaction, totally feeling like paradises.
  • They both are fun and relaxing jobs with no on-calls in a nice and supportive environment.
  • They both are Contract of Service posts.
  • Both posts are temporary. I cannot stay and keep working in the long term due to the realities of life.
  • They both make me discover my true interests (NUMed TF post: Medical Education; KKIA Limbang MO post: General Practice).
  • I work towards some postgraduate qualifications in both posts (AFHEA and FHEA in my NUMed TF post; MRCP(UK) Part 2 and DCH FOP in my KKIA Limbang MO post).
  • I took and passed an online entrance exam during both posts (UKFP Situational Judgement Test in my NUMed TF post; MInTFM Clinical Entrance Test in my KKIA Limbang MO post).
  • For both posts, I live in a very nicely furnished house, located about 2km from work.
  • Both posts feature a slightly old but very nicely furnished office.
  • Both posts provide me with an email account for professional work purposes.
  • They both involve regular Continuing Professional Development sessions that are quite helpful.
  • They both require me to be far away from my family, with limited opportunities to return home (NUMed TF post: Due to the Covid lockdowns; KKIA Limbang MO post: Due to the long distances).
  • During both posts, I voluntarily take on extra work to gain more experience (NUMed TF post: Extra teaching sessions; KKIA Limbang MO post: Locums).
  • Both posts involve a 7-person team with very nice colleagues.
  • In both posts, I took some time to get to know my colleagues well as I was new to the circle. We then started having interesting group activities regularly.
  • I experienced an adjustment period during the first month of both posts, but I adapted very well to the job afterwards.
  • Both posts saw me working with my fullest enthusiasm and dedication.
  • In both posts, I like to give long and detailed TED talks (to my students or patients), sometimes going overtime.
  • Both posts were offered to me at a very unexpected time, and turned out to be the greatest gifts for me.
  • They both gave me an escape from the preceding months of isolation (Isolation due to Covid lockdowns before my NUMed TF post; Isolation at Sundar before my KKIA Limbang MO post).
  • They both give me a lot of free time for leisure activities.
  • Both posts make my friends envy me.
  • In both posts, I avoid taking leaves (except for Chinese New Year and for postgraduate exams) because I love the job so much.
  • Both workplaces are located near an international border (NUMed is near the Singapore border; KKIA Limbang is near the Brunei border).
